Keeping Canada Connected

The first and most important step in order for your skin to look and feel good is ‘cleansing’. Your cleansing routine will fine tune your complexion. This is why it is so important to cleanse morning and night and to use a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type. Once upon a time we were told to just splash some water on our face in the morning and then apply our moisturizer. We now know better!

Overnight while we sleep our skin regenerates and exfoliates dead skin. It also gathers bacteria and oils from your pillow, hair, sheets and the air in your bedroom. All that said, it’s important to not ‘over cleanse’ which is why I can’t stress enough that although we need to cleanse every morning, we also need to keep in mind that a simple light cleanse is all that is necessary (unless you fell asleep with your makeup on, that’s a whole other topic!) A light cleanse clears your pores from debris and bacteria and prepares your skin for the day. It also dampens your skin so that any serum or moisturizer applied next is better absorbed. Damp skin absorbs skincare more efficiently.

Keep in mind that if you are seeing a dermatologist for specific skin issues you must follow the routine your Dr. put in place for you. There are some medicated creams that need to be applied to dry skin; please follow your physician’s instructions if you are applying something that is prescribed by a specialist.

So how do you wash your face properly? First step is to apply some lukewarm water on your face. Second step is to take a small amount of your cleanser, less than a pea size, and gently start massaging it into your damp skin for about 10 seconds. Third step is to rinse well. The final step is just as important as the cleansing process itself – drying your face. With a clean soft face towel it is very important to pat, not rub, pat your face to dry your skin.

There are many gentle cleansers to choose from. For budget friendly cleansers I suggest Cerave Hydrating Cleanser or Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser from the drugstore. If you’re willing to spend a little more you can find some great gentle cleansers at Sephora like Fresh Soy Cleanser, First Aid Beauty Pure Skin Face Cleanser, Philosophy Purity Cleanser, or Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser to name just a few. Sephora associates are more than willing to help you choose a cleanser that is within your budget for your particular skin type as are most cosmeticians at the drugstore. Keep in mind that you can get free samples at Sephora to try any product, including cleansers. Most drugstores provide samples too, unfortunately not for all products, however, if you keep your receipt you can return just about any beauty product at the drugstore if you say you had a reaction to it. At Sephora you can return any product within the first 30 days, no questions asked!

A question I get asked often is whether your morning cleanser is sufficient to remove your makeup at night. The answer is yes and no. Your morning gentle cleanser is perfect as your ‘second cleanse’ at night but not sufficient for your ‘first cleanse’. First cleanse? Second cleanse? Why two cleansers? In my next blog I will discuss why we must ‘double’ cleanse at night if we are wearing makeup! Tune in to keep your best face forward!
